Kodachi Kwai 'Special Needs' Judo Coaches

Western Area Special Needs Senior CoachKen has been practising judo for many years and coached junior mainstream clubs for a long time before he decided to concentrate on his Special Needs club. He was involved at the beginning of this branch of judo in this country, and soon gained much experience on the continent where 'Special Needs' judo has been long established and is called G-Judo. Now there are more clubs in this country - some of the their numbers travel with the Bristol Judoka to these competitions.

Mike Guatieri

Mike Guatieri Black belt and Grade 'B' refereeMike Guatieri is a Grade 'B' mainstream judo referee and currently going for his Grade 'A' refereeing badge. Mike love of judo can be demonstrated when he spend many weekends coaching or attending tournaments. When there are 'Special Needs' tournaments in the United Kingdom he will be seen officiating at these events. Mike also runs a judo club, 'Yate Star' in Yate near Bristol on Monday evenings and some of the Kodachi players attend this club for additional coaching. Through his involvement with 'Yate Star', he encourages his younger club members with any 'Special Needs' requirements to attend Kodachi Kwai judo club at Southville, Bristol. Mike other passion in life are motorbikes.

Sarah Buckland
Sarah Buckland assistance to Mike Guatieri at Yate Star and brown belt CompetitorSarah Buckland is a late entrant to judo because in her younger days her father would not allow her to participate in this sport. When one of her children started judo, this was the spur that Sarah required to get involved. In her short career, she has progressed through tournaments to her current grade - brown belt. Sarah can also been seen on Monday evenings at 'Yate Star' judo club. During the day she is employed in education and specialises in assisting pupils that have 'Special Needs' requirements.

Marianne Duggan

Mother to Catherine Duggan and recently promoted to an orange belt at Kodachi Kwai Marianne is the mother of Catherine and brings her daughter to Kodachi Kwai. When Catherine first started judo, her mother used to watch her participate from the sidelines. Over the years, Ken Thorne, has persuaded Marianne to take up judo as well and has recently progressed from a yellow to an orange belt. Marianne is now seen on the mat as one of Ken Thorne coaching assistants.
